Before I list off the cafes and restaurants in Canggu that I think are seriously overrated, I just want to first say that I have personally been to all of these restaurants and I’m not saying that they’re bad – I’m just saying that for how much they’re hyped up, they definitely fall short.
So without further ado, here’s the restaurants in Canggu I don’t think are worth it and why I won’t be going there again anytime soon.

1. Motion Cafe
Ok so this one I actually don’t recommend because not only have I had stomach issues after eating here (the soup, the waffles, the avocado toast… yup I kept coming back and trying to give it a second chance but each time it failed me), but I’ve also heard from several of my friends that they had similar experiences after eating at this cafe. So for the sake of your stomach, go somewhere else!
*I also tried their juice cleanse and not only was it the most disgusting juice cleanse I’ve ever done, compared to all the other options you have in Bali it just isn’t worth the price you pay.

2. Crate
I’m probably going to have a million people up in arms at me for including this one, but for the price you pay and the amount of time you usually have to wait, I just don’t think it’s worth it for what you get. The food is decent, don’t get me wrong. But it’s nothing amazing. I think this place just became such a Canggu staple that they’ll continue to get business regardless of the fact that their food is just mediocre and the wait times in the morning are insane. You’ve been warned.
3. Moana Fish Eatery
Everyone I’ve talked to raves about this place, but after going there myself I can’t for the life of me understand why. The fish was pretty whatever (and actually a bit dry), but the worst were the tuna tacos (pictured above) – they were nothing like what I expected and they tasted awful. Imagine if someone shredded up tuna meat, doused it in marinara sauce and threw it on an oily cracker. Voila, you have Moana’s tuna tacos. If you’re going to go anyways, do yourself a favor and order literally anything else!

4. Monsieur Spoon
I need to preface this one by saying that I have a SUPER high standard for French food, and Monsieur Spoon just isn’t up to snuff. But honestly, I can’t say I’m surprised. Finding good quality French food in Asia (for a reasonable price) is as easy as finding good quality wine in Asia (again, for a reasonable price)…. nearly impossible. So, if you want to try Monsieur Spoon I would just recommend you keep your expectations low.

5. Warung Bu Mi
The food here is great, it’s the price that has this restaurant included on this list. You shouldn’t ever be paying more than 20-30k per plate of food (20k for vegetarians, 30k for meat eaters) at a “local”-style warung. But Warung Bu Mi became very savvy to the fact that it caters almost entirely to tourists and they charge 40-60k per plate for the same quality food as any other local warung. While that is’t much of a price difference, it’s more the principal of the thing. Do yourself a favor, go to an actual local warung, enjoy a meal that’s just as (if not more!) delicious and don’t get ripped off!

*Beach club bonus: The Lawn
I’m sorry, but the second La Brisa opened its doors, the Lawn became a second-class beach club in Canggu. It’s not that the lawn isn’t cute, it’s just that La Brisa is so much better for pretty much the exact same price. In my opinion, the Lawn is a Canggu classic – which just means it’s been around longer. So if you’re traveling to Bali for only a short while, skip the “classic” (i.e. the Lawn) and go straight for the best (La Brisa)!
