Batu-Bali is one of my favorite local Bali jewelry brands. They sell beautiful handmade bracelets (the bracelets are made by local women to support the island’s economy), and the best part is that the majority of the proceeds from each purchase goes to a non-profit organization in Bali called “Bye Bye Plastic Bags” (BBPB), which is all about banning plastic-bag use in Bali and keeping the island’s beaches and rivers clean and free of plastic!
Desy and Chantal, the sisters who founded the company are seriously amazing. Bali was always their favorite holiday destination, and they have pretty much known for almost a decade now that it would one day be their permanent hom. In 2011 when Desy finally made the move to Bali however, she was disgusted and horrified to find that so many of the beaches around Bali and Nusa Lembongan (a neighboring island) were choked with plastic waste.
Immediately wanting to do something about the situation, they donated as much money as they could to BBPB and began volunteering for beach clean-ups. But even though they were doing all they could, and more than most would do, it still didn’t feel like enough. And that’s when they got the idea to start Batu-Bali as a way of fundraising even MORE money for BBPB to help keep their favorite place in the world as beautiful and clean and free from plastic trash as it had been their whole lives.
