5 Popular Sights You’re Better Off Skipping in Bali

Ubud Palace

There are SO MANY jaw-droppingly beautiful temples in Bali that just blow this palace out of the water – from an architecture/aesthetic standpoint – that it’s not really worth going out of your way to see it if you’re on a time crunch. Instead, head to the Ubud market across the street and admire it from the outside while you haggle down a vendor on a souvenir you’ll love forever!

Monkey Forest

I may be biased because I think monkeys are hellish cretins, but honestly Monkey forest is not worth the hype. First of all, there’s monkeys all over Ubud and Uluwatu, so you don’t have to go to one specific spot to see them. Second, there’s no reason to pay to go see a bunch of monkeys who are some of the worst behaved on the entire island and MOST likely to steal something from you. Third, the monkeys at monkey forest are way too bold and especially love jumping on people’s heads… yeah, no thank you.

Tanah Lot

Don’t get me wrong, this temple is gorgeous, and it’s just really cool to see a structure built on a giant rock in the ocean. But, there are SOOO many tourists there every night for sunset (the best time to go) that it really just ruins any possibility of it being as magical is it could be (and it’s DEFINITELY less magical than you think it will be in your head). So, if you’re on a time crunch, just skip it. Bali has a plethora of beautiful temples that are far less touristy. You can thank me later.

*Also, you can’t actually go in the temple. At low tide you can just walk up to the entrance to be blessed by a Hindu priest.

Uluwatu Temple

This is another temple that is on a lot of Bali attraction lists that, after visiting it myself, I really just don’t think is worth all the hype. I LOVE cliff faces. Seriously, all you have to do is take one quick glance at my instagram to see how much I love anything and everything to do with cliffs. But, other than the fact that this temple is on a cliff (which isn’t really much of a selling point since some of the best views are obstructed because of the way it’s built ) it was pretty unremarkable as far as bali temples go. There are so many EXTREMELY stunning and just downright breath-taking temples in Bali that exploring this one really is a waste of time if you’re only in Bali for a week or two. I say skip it.

The Beach Clubs in Seminyak/Kuta

Literally NONE of the beach clubs in Seminyak or Kuta are any different than any beach club anywhere else in the world. There’s nothing special about them, nothing unique, and definitely nothing that says “Bali”. If you want an experience with a much more “bali” vibe or at least a beach club that offers something more unique and memorable, I recommend heading to Sundays or Karma in Uluwatu (the Omnia here is also INSANE and def worth checking out, although it does have more of a “Miami” vibe in my opinion) or La Brisa or Finns in Canggu.
